Spent some time yesterday at Massey University talking to new MBA students about the importance of investing time up front when teams are formed. Agreeing how they work together, clarifying common purpose, maximising strengths, assigning clear roles, how disagreements will be resolved, and how success will be celebrated. Wish someone supported me with this when I did by MBA - the group work was a nightmare!

Thanks Patricia Bossons PhD CPsychol for including me in your MBA guest speaker line up!

In my previous life (working in finance in the corporate world) I was told twice, in two sperate organisations, by two different managers, that laughing was inappropriate for my role. I’ve had similar feedback from a client in my current career too.

Fast forward to last week – I left a coaching session in tears – tears of laugher! My client did too. At that point I knew I was in the right place with the right kind of client.

(BTW - the session was actually about something quite serious and critical to the client’s success as a leader. His feedback after the session was while the content was useful, he needed a good laugh.)

If you’re up for some hard work spiced with fun and laughter – please get in touch. It might just be the best medicine. www.growtobe.co.nz.

Team coaching as like the chef’s specials. Depending on the environment (or produce in season) we work on what best suits the team at the time. The team (or diner) doesn’t know what they are going to get, they trust the process.

In contrast other types of team development, like training and facilitation, are like a standard menu. It is tried and tested, ingredients are prepared well in advance, and the desired outcome is pre-determined. When you order it, you pretty much know what you’re going to get (chicken parmigiana is chicken parmigiana).

Both menus are good. It depends on what your team needs and how much risk you’re willing to take for high rewards.
